Getting started on how to approach fly fishing Northern Quebec great sport fish species the Lake Trout, brook trout, Northern Pike and  whitefish.

Lake Trout

This species is offered in Late May to early July only because after those dates the lake trout after the water has warmed up seem to head out in the deeper waters making them not has pleasing for fly fishing. This sport fish offers reel screaming action unequaled in northern Québec matched with his  size and strength makes it a undeniable favorite for fly fishing. The lake trout being the biggest of the char family offer great trophy fishing opportunities throughout the fishing season in the 6 to 8 pound class and early in the season will take a dry fly or streamer quite easily. The bigger trophy fish are caught mostly at ice out in the middle of May and in early September because this fish species dislikes the warmer summer water conditions and heads for the deeps regions of the reservoir. However some big fish will hold near cold springs or rivers that enter the reservoir and where anglers may catch a 35-pound or more and test their equipment with these old giants.

Northern Pike

The ultimate cold water predator of the Outardes River the Northern Pike offer excellent fly fishing opportunity throughout the summer months and late fall. NSFA caters to fly fishermen who wants to cast big streamers and terrestrials in small bays and inlets around the reservoir. Each guide is familiarized with this ferocious game fish’s feeding habits. The average weight of the northern pike is 5 to 8 pounds. But the occasional 30 + pound fish will scare the heck of you when it grabs a # 3/0 mouse fly 5 feet in front of you with such force and ferocity that you will remember this champion of game fish for the rest of your life Guaranteed

Brook Trout

The average brook trout weight is 1 / 2 pounds with the occasional 4 pounder or more. NSFA offers a remote location for brook trout. Accessible by boat only the area is a prime brook trout fishery located on the Outardes River. Our records Brook trout weigh in at 8 1/2 pounds on June 8, 2001. This is a pristine wilderness area without roads or industries that affect the water quality of the Outardes River, A very remote area where fish and game are plentiful. We suggest Spin casting or fly fishing in this river system no need for those big trolling rods here.

Lake Whitefish

Local fishermen usually ignore this species, but it offers it share of action. Its tiny fragile mouth demands a delicate hook setting with # 10 or smaller fly. Fish can weigh in excess of 15 pounds, so your drag better be set at minimum because the whitefish have delicate mouths that can rip easily. Fresh water lake whitefish are plentiful and good eating species despite local bias.
