Outardes River Float trips

Outardes River Description

French Rivière Aux Outardes, river in Côte-Nord (“North Shore”) region, east-central Quebec province, Canada, rising in the Otish Mountains and flowing southward for 300 miles (480 km) through Lake Plétipi to the St. Lawrence River, 18 miles southwest of Baie-Comeau. Named after the numerous wild geese for which it is famous, the Outardes River, with its many rapids and falls is also well renowned for the quality of its water and of course world class fishing for trophy lake trout , northern pike and brook trout.

What to expect on this Float Trip

The Outardes River is a cold tea stained slow to medium flow that begins in the heart of the Quebec boreal forest the Otish Mountain Range. This ultimate sport fishing destination is second to none when it come to fishing virgin water’s. Very few anglers are able to wet a line in this vast inhabited region of northern Quebec NSFA is the only guide service that is offering float trip since 2002. This unique fishing destination puts anglers and nature into one great unforgettable fishing trip. NSFA only puts together 8 Float trip a year with a maximum of 4 anglers per trip which adds up to 32 anglers a year who will have the chance to experience this ultimate destination

This is an example of the six day float trip. The 8 & 10 Day trip you get to spend extra days in the best sections of the river. These float can change without notice and are designed to be fished while taking into consideration river conditions, amount of water in the river and time of year. Each trip can vary from this example, not knowing the river conditions more than a week in advance make predicting the water levels and conditions quite difficult.

Day 1

We will pick up anglers at the Baie-Comeau Airport and then drive up to the outpost camp on the Outardes River. Accommodation will be the Outardes river Outpost camp (fully equipped camp) this will help us to get prepared for the long trip ahead. We will fish the region of the outpost camp for the first day.

On the second day we will travel 50 km upriver by 28 ft river canoes from the our outpost camp to the headwaters of the Outardes river. Occasionally stopping to test the best pools for great fishing action, this will help each anglers get acquainted with the mighty Outardes river. When we arrive at the northernmost reaches of the Outardes we will start are float trip down river. Huge northern pike and lakers abound in this section. When we reach our last Guide tent location we will empty the boats and prepare are sleeping quarters we will spend 2 night at this location and fish the local reaches of the river and tributaries including small ponds and lakes by float tube for big trophy brook trout and splake (brook trout x lake trout cross which is a natural occurrence on the Outardes River).

Day 3

The third day we will explore the big rapid located not to far from the outlet of the Matonipi river the main tributary of the Outardes River, This is a huge rapid with lots of nice brook trout pocket water throughout the rapids. We will also visits some of the local ponds and small lakes. Big northern pike and lakers are present below the big rapid. Later in the day we will head to the middle guide tent to spend the next 1 1/2 day in the middle section of the Float trip.

Day 4

After a hardy breakfast we will hit the local tributaries for brookies and splake. We can also hit some small ponds in one of the small tributaries that empty in the Outardes River. Lots of great pools are available in this sections which has lots of tributaries that can hold nice size fish and even big whitefish schools (average weight 4 pounds) these will take a dry fly quite easily and can give us some great backing action.

Day 5

Another great section heading towards are last outpost camp we will fish lots of brook trout and splake filled ponds and small lakes, a float tubers heaven. Great Lakers and northern pike action also awaits you in this section with lots of pools and deep slow moving waters. We will finish the day at the last guide tent location.

Day 6

The last day of the 6 day float trip, we will fish all day heading down the last leg of the trip. Even if this is the last section it ‘s still a great stretch of river. You never know what will hit your fly or spoon in this final day of the trip. Big fish awaits you. The last night you will spend at the outpost camp. We will head out to town the next morning.

This was an example of the six day float trip.

Fish Species

Big Northern Pike is the standard here (average fish is 8 to 12 pounds) this ferocious predator is well suited for creating great angling opportunities on the Outardes River, yes we offer river trophy northern pike fishing. Northern pike that spend most of there lives in rivers are allot stronger than their lake dwelling brothers. They will sprint a lot longer and jump out of the water to escape the angler’s grip, if they only knew we are going to release them unharmed.

Lake trout is the biggest of the char family, this fish offer great fishing opportunities throughout the fishing season in the 6 to 8 pound class and will take a dry fly or streamer quite easily. The bigger trophy fish are caught all threw the season because this river dwelling lake trout is trapped in the Outardes river between two huge waterfalls and will hold in deep polls near cold springs or tributaries that enter the reservoir and where anglers may catch a 35-pound or more and test their equipment and skills with these old giants. Accessible by boat only, this area is a prime lake trout fishery located on upper reaches of the Outardes River. Our records river lake trout weigh in at 38 1/2 pounds on June 16, 2002. This is a pristine wilderness area without roads or industries that affect the water quality of the Outardes River, A very remote area where fish and game are plentiful. We suggest Spin casting or fly fishing in this river system no need for those big trolling rods here.

Brook Trout is the most beautiful of all fresh water fishes. In late august these beauties change to their spawning colors, the big males with their hooked kype and bright orange bellies, blue aureoles on the side, dark wavy lines (vermiculations) on the back to the ivory white on the leading edges of the fins will impress the pure brook trout fanatic. The average brook trout weight is 1 1/2 pounds with the occasional 5 pounder or more. NSFA offers this remote location for brook trout. Accessible by boat only the area is a prime brook trout fishery located on the Outardes River. Our records Brook trout weigh in at 8 1/2 pounds on June 8, 2001. This is a pristine wilderness area without roads or industries that affect the water quality of the Outardes River, A very remote area where fish and game are plentiful. We suggest Spin casting or fly fishing in this river system no need for those big trolling rods here.
